A New Leaf

A New Leaf logoThough primarily known as a nonprofit that provides shelter and other services for domestic violence victims, A New Leaf provides a range of programs for Valley homeless, families, foster children and those in need of financial advice. Now, more of these services will be available in person in Surprise. The Arizona Department of Housing awarded $1.14 million to A New Leaf to support the West Valley Housing Support Center in Surprise. Construction is set to begin on the $1.5 million project in April 2022 with opening expected by September. The center will offer temporary housing to women and families as well as housing support services to far-West Valley residents in need of permanent housing, employment and other related services. West Valley State of the State Address

Governor Doug Ducey speaks at the West Valley State of the State Address.Governor Ducey gave his eighth and final State of the State Address to local dignitaries, business leaders and community members on Wednesday, January 12. The event took place at the Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, hosted by WESTMARC. He referred to the West Valley as the “heartbeat of Arizona” and deemed the area the “economic driver for the state of Arizona” in the decades to come. It may be his last year, but he promised a busy 2022, focusing on education and the southern border changes.

USTA Tennis Series

  • February 4-6: Adult 65 and Over 6.0 and 9.0 Men and Women
  • February 11-13: Adult 65 and Over 8.0 Men & Women

These events will take place at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex located at 14469 W. Paradise Ln. Fans can take advantage of free admission and enjoy all of the tennis action! Tax Preparation Assistance Program

The City of Surprise has partnered again with A New Leaf to offer free tax preparation services to both individuals and families with qualifying incomes. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers IRS trained and certified volunteers to assist households making less than $58,000 and need help processing their annual income tax returns for free. Tax preparation assistance will be available until April 18 at the Surprise Resource Center, 12425 W. Bell Rd., Suite 124 and through April 13 at Riverboat Bingo, 18300 W. Bell Rd. Please note the Resource Center will be closed on Monday, February 21, for President’s Day. For more information, call 623.222.1600.

Surprise Tentative Budget Kick-Off

The FY2023 budget building process has begun! The Finance Department will give a series of presentations to City Council over the next few months, and the City Manager will release his Recommended Budget in April, which will be followed by public review and then final adoption of a balanced budget in June. Please stay tuned to future Council Meetings for the overall development of the budget and upcoming annual process.

Surprise Spring Training

AZ Cactus League 2022The 20th annual Surprise Spring Training Season will kick off on Saturday, February 26 with the annual Surprise Sundancer Charity Game at Surprise Stadium, featuring home teams – the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals.

Season ticket, mini-plan packages and single-game tickets for the 2022 Spring Training Season are on sale now at SurpriseStadium.com. Each ticket option will offer unique perks, savings over the individual game ticket price, choice of the best available seating locations and exclusive access to special season ticket plan holder events and pre-sale opportunities.

Sunday in the Park

Sunday in the Park returns to Mark Coronado Park! Join us on February 6 from 3 – 7 p.m. for live music, various food trucks, an assortment of beer and wine and family-friendly entertainment such as bounce houses, face painting, a trackless train and more! Fishing at Surprise Lake

Did you know the Game and Fish department keeps our community lake filled with catfish and trout most of the year? This is an excellent time to get outside and go fishing at our local lake. A fishing license is required for anyone age 10 and up. A youth license is only $5 for the entire year and is available up to age 18. Licenses are available at azgfd.gov.

Here is a schedule of when fish will be stocked into Surprise Lake (Bullard Ave. / Paradise Ln.):

  • February 7-11, Trout
  • February 21-25, Trout
  • March 7-11, Trout
  • April 11-15, Catfish
  • April 25-29, Catfish

Stockings will occur randomly Monday through Saturday during the week indicated. Grab a friend or your kids and catch a few!

Council Meetings and Agenda

The next regularly scheduled City Council Meetings will take place on February 1 and 15 at 6 p.m. and will be open to the public for in-person attendance. You can also watch live at surpriseaz.gov/surprisetv, or the Surprise City Gov Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofsurprise. Cox channel 11 also carries the meetings live. Agendas are always posted online at a minimum of two days prior.

My name is Chris Judd and I am honored to have been elected as your City Councilman for District 6. I am a native to Arizona and a graduate of Arizona State University. I have been a part of the Surprise business community since the mid 90’s. My family and I have lived here for over a decade and we have experienced the growth and changes that Surprise has undergone in that time. I look forward to working with the City of Surprise and my neighbors to ensure our beautiful community is impacted in positive ways. City News

City Offices will CLOSE in honor of Presidents’ Day on Monday, February, 18th. City trash and recycling customers are reminded that collection will be postponed by one day the week of February 18 – 22.

New Openings

Destiny Springs, a new behavioral healthcare facility in Surprise, will have an open house on February 16th from 12 – 4 p.m. They are located at 17300 N Dysart Road.

Spring Break Camp Registration

Games, crafts and field trips will keep your child busy during the school break in a fun, supervised environment. Registration opens February 13 for a camp that runs March 18 – 21. DATE NIGHT: Parent’s Night Out

This event is being held February 15 at Sierra Montana Recreation Center. Kids must be potty-trained. You must pre-register for this class. www.surpriseaz.gov/recreation

NEW Photography Classes

We are excited to have two new photography classes! Stop Motion Photography is for youth ages 10 – 12. Intro to Photography is for adults 18 & up who are interested in learning how to use a camera and basic editing tools. Both classes start mid-February! www.surpriseaz.gov/recreation

Sunday in the Park Food Truck Festival

USTA Pro-Circuit Tournament

February 11 – 17 at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. Thirty-two athletes will compete for a total of $25,000 in prize money. www.surpriseaz.gov/tennis

Babe Ruth Baseball

Babe Ruth Baseball registration for 13 – 15 year olds is February 11 – March 22. Teams play games at the Surprise Recreation Campus on the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers auxiliary fields.

Spring Training Begins

Fire Station Open House

Open House is Saturday, March 2 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Fire Station 303, located at 15440 N Cotton Lane. Residents can come out and meet the firefighters, check out living and eating quarters, walk through the bays and see the fire trucks.

Residential Waste Cleanup Event

Drop off up to 2000 pounds of residential waste March 9th from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Northwest Regional Landfill. One load per household. Please bring a driver’s license and a utility bill to show proof of a Surprise home address.

Level 4 Youth Event

On March 9th from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m., there will be dancing, food, art and a view from the 4th level of the parking garage. Free event with school ID. Please call 623-222-1033 for more information.
