APS West Valley Central 230KV Connection Project Update

APS is currently in the process of conducting technical analysis to determine the potential routing options for the new 230kV power lines. Another round of public comment will be solicited following the determination of a preferred route. More information should be available at the end of February. Please continue to check my website, newsletters, and Facebook for updates!

2021 Surprise City Academy

The Surprise City Academy is going virtual this year. Classes will begin on February 22 and will happen weekly on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. through April 26. The Surprise City Academy is a great way to learn about city government structure, get updated on local issues, and get to know your city leaders! The class is FREE, but you must be registered. Day of Service

If you are looking for a way to help others, please consider helping out during the Surprise Day of Service on February 20, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Volunteers will help with various projects, including landscaping, painting, trimming of shrubs, debris removal, and more. Projects will help neighborhoods and homeowners who may not be physically or financially able to maintain their homes. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Larry Garcia at Larry.Garcia@surpriseaz.gov or call 623.222.1522.

Holiday Sanitation Schedule

City offices are closed on February 15 in observance of Presidents’ Day. Please note that the holiday sanitation schedule will be in effect.

Spring Training

Spring Training 2021 is scheduled to begin on February 27. The Texas Rangers are set to take on the Kansas City Royals on February 27 at 1:05 p.m.! Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, the Spring Training Schedule and information is subject to change.

What’s Happening on that Lot?

  • Amazon construction is moving along and expected to be completed by April 2021!
  • EOS Fitness Marley Park, located at 13644 N. Litchfield Park
  • Horizon Aviation & Machining, located 11267 N. 132nd Avenue
  • Ancona at Surprise Pointe 33, located at the NWC of Dysart Road and Sweetwater Avenue. This 27 acre site will house two industrial buildings, one 84,300 sq.ft. and the other 72,000 sq.ft., each containing 12 spec suites.

Fire Station 308 Update

Construction is continuing on Fire Station 308, located at the southeast corner of Litchfield Road and Cactus Road.

Business Resource

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has reopened for new borrowers and certain existing PPP borrowers. Summary information on the PPP is available on www.surpriseaz.gov/businesshelp, under Business Resources.

Council Meetings and Agenda

The next regularly scheduled City Council Meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 16 at 6 p.m. Council meetings are currently closed to in-person attendance. To watch live, please visit www.surpriseaz.gov/surprisetv, or the Surprise City Gov Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cityofsurprise. Cox channel 11 and Century Link channel 8513 will also carry the meetings live. Public comment will be accepted by phone and email. Instructions for public comment will be included on each meeting agenda. Agendas are always posted online at a minimum of two days prior.

If you see something on the agenda that concerns you, please reach out before the meeting so I have time to address your concern. I may even ask your questions during the City Council presentation. The best way to reach me is chris.judd@surpriseaz.gov.

It is an honor and a privilege to be selected by my colleagues to serve as the Vice Mayor of Surprise. City Council selects a Vice Mayor every January to serve a 1-year term. I very much appreciate the opportunity to further serve our great community and I am looking forward to a great year in Surprise!

Recycling Update

The Public Works Department is the group in charge of recycling in our city. They are going to give a public presentation to City Council at our next Regular City Council Work Session, which is on February 4 at 4 pm. You can attend the meeting in person, or view it online at www.surpriseaz.gov/surprisetv. If you miss the presentation, a video will copy be available at the same link above under the “meetings” tab. This will be a great way to get details on the challenges and potential solutions to our recycling problem. If you have any ideas or comments, before or after the presentation, please send them to me!

Economic Development

The City of Surprise is growing and expanding daily. The Surprise Railplex is soon to be home to Pima Door & Supply, United Construction Group, Skyway Commons, Level Crossing and National Indoor RV Centers. Surprise Pointe welcomes Firestone Complete Auto Care, which is currently under construction, as well as Quick Quack Car Wash, who just held their groundbreaking.

De Boa Jiu Jitsu Academy recently expanded their location at 14763 W. Cactus Road. Congratulations on your success in Surprise and I look forward to your continued growth.

The Angry Crab Shack opened in the Bel Mar complex, 11340 W. Bell Road. This new seafood restaurant offers a wide variety of seafood favorites and a family friendly environment.

Spencer’s Place is now open! This family owned and operated coffee shop is located at 15341 W. Waddell Road Suite B101. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to watching you grow in Surprise.

Road Work Update

The Waddell Road project is nearing completion and the city is still aiming for an opening date this spring! Waddell Road will have a total of six travel lanes, a traffic signal at Sarival Avenue, streetlights, bike lanes, turn lanes and more. Litchfield Road is scheduled for a July 2020 completion date. Paving will begin from Cactus to Sweetwater while grading work south of Cactus is ongoing. The improvements will include two additional lanes of travel, sidewalks, bike lanes, street lighting and more.

Cactus Road is closed from Citrus to Perryville Roads; and Perryville is closed from Cactus to Shangri La Roads, for utility work, with a scheduled reopening of February 15. Drivers should consider Peoria Avenue or Cotton Lane as alternative routes.

Please remember that utility companies are constantly doing work that may impact traffic flow. We appreciate your patience during this time.

State of the State

A special thank you to Senator Majority Leader Rick Gray for the hosting Mayor Skip Hall and I at the State Capitol for the Senate Opening Ceremony, on Monday, January 13. Following Opening Session, we were invited to the House Chamber where Governor Doug Ducey gave his State of the State address.

Toll Brothers

Toll Brothers has welcomed Sterling Grove to Surprise. This new community spreads across nearly 800 acres south of Cactus Road and Cotton Lane. They offer 13 model homes, 3 pools, club houses, a golf course and much more. Thank you for choosing Surprise!

Upcoming Events

Spring Training kicks off on February 21 as the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers compete at home. This season will bring 29 games to the Surprise Stadium for your enjoyment! Tickets are available for purchase online or in person at the Box Office. For more information, the full game schedule, ticket purchase and more, please visit www.SurpriseStadium.com.

The Surprise Community Park, 15930 N. Bullard Ave, will host the Teen Sand Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, February 29 from 4-7 pm. Teens, ages 12-17, will need to have a completed participation waiver turned in prior to play. Residents are only $5 and registration forms are found online at https://secure.rec1.com/AZ/surprise-community-rec.

Your opportunity to quiz your councilman at my monthly meet and greet will happen on Wednesday, February 26 from 6-8 p.m. This is an informal gathering, which makes it a great opportunity for you to talk with me one on one and ask questions, share ideas, or chat about our community. The event will take place at Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, 14029 W. Waddell Road. I hope to see you there.

My name is Chris Judd and I am honored to have been elected as your City Councilman for District 6. I am a native to Arizona and a graduate of Arizona State University. I have been a part of the Surprise business community since the mid 90’s. My family and I have lived here for over a decade and we have experienced the growth and changes that Surprise has undergone in that time. I look forward to working with the City of Surprise and my neighbors to ensure our beautiful community is impacted in positive ways. City News

City Offices will CLOSE in honor of Presidents’ Day on Monday, February, 18th. City trash and recycling customers are reminded that collection will be postponed by one day the week of February 18 – 22.

New Openings

Destiny Springs, a new behavioral healthcare facility in Surprise, will have an open house on February 16th from 12 – 4 p.m. They are located at 17300 N Dysart Road.

Spring Break Camp Registration

Games, crafts and field trips will keep your child busy during the school break in a fun, supervised environment. Registration opens February 13 for a camp that runs March 18 – 21. DATE NIGHT: Parent’s Night Out

NEW Photography Classes

We are excited to have two new photography classes! Stop Motion Photography is for youth ages 10 – 12. Intro to Photography is for adults 18 & up who are interested in learning how to use a camera and basic editing tools. Both classes start mid-February! www.surpriseaz.gov/recreation

Sunday in the Park Food Truck Festival

USTA Pro-Circuit Tournament

February 11 – 17 at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. Thirty-two athletes will compete for a total of $25,000 in prize money. www.surpriseaz.gov/tennis

Babe Ruth Baseball

Babe Ruth Baseball registration for 13 – 15 year olds is February 11 – March 22. Teams play games at the Surprise Recreation Campus on the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers auxiliary fields.

Spring Training Begins

Fire Station Open House

Open House is Saturday, March 2 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Fire Station 303, located at 15440 N Cotton Lane. Residents can come out and meet the firefighters, check out living and eating quarters, walk through the bays and see the fire trucks.

Residential Waste Cleanup Event

Drop off up to 2000 pounds of residential waste March 9th from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Northwest Regional Landfill. One load per household. Please bring a driver’s license and a utility bill to show proof of a Surprise home address.

Level 4 Youth Event

On March 9th from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m., there will be dancing, food, art and a view from the 4th level of the parking garage. Free event with school ID. Please call 623-222-1033 for more information.
