Modern Dentistry Ribbon Cutting

Monday, February 28, we joined Surprise Modern Dentistry for a ribbon cutting! Surprise Modern Dentistry owner/dentist, Dr. Joshua Shaw, hosted the ceremony in honor of the opening of their office located at 13733 N. Prasada Pkwy., Suite 108. Welcome to Surprise, we’re happy to have you!

Read Across America

Read Across AmericaIn celebration of Read Across America Week, on Monday, February 28, I read to two Kindergarten classes at Canyon Ridge Elementary, and Tuesday, March 1, I read to a Kindergarten and first-grade class at Countryside Elementary. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child, in every community to celebrate reading. We all had a great time!

Surprise Retail Survey Now Open

We want to know how we can make our city a one-stop shopping and dining destination. The retail survey will help the City identify retail strengths within the community, as well as pinpoint opportunities to bring additional amenities closer to home. We also have a youth-only survey to better understand what our younger generation wants to see. The Shop, Eat & Play Youth Survey is for youth, under the age of 18. The Surprise Retail Survey runs through Sunday, April 24, and is available online at surpriseaz.gov/retailsurvey.

Spring Eggstravaganza

EggStravaganza! Egg HuntParticipate in Spring Eggstravaganza on April 16 from 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Surprise Recreation Campus! The event is free and features fun for the whole family. Residents will enjoy inflatables, face painting, a special appearance by Mr. and Mrs. Bunny and a series of egg hunts filled with fun toys and treats. Food and drink are available for purchase, there will be a minimal fee on some activities.

Gates open at 7:30 a.m. and hunt times are as follows:

  • 8:20 a.m. – 2 and under*
  • 8:50 a.m. – 3 – 4 year olds*
  • 9:20 a.m. – 5 – 6 year olds**
  • 9:40 a.m. – 7 – 8 year olds**
  • 10:00 a.m. – 9 – 10 year olds**
  • 10:20 a.m. – all ages**

*1 parent allowed on the field
**Age group may be combined or split based on participation numbers. Times are subject to change.

Surprise Community Outreach Program

Community Outreach Grant ProgramSurprise is accepting applications for the Community Outreach Program now through April 29. This City Council-led initiative provides funding assistance to organizations within the City of Surprise for programs, events and activities that enhance the overall lifestyle of the community. https://bit.ly/36uKIzB

KIDZ Jamboree Event

An event for kids aged 0-5 in celebration of the Week of the Young Child. This fun, family event will showcase early childhood programs and services available in the community, like resources, child care/preschools, libraries and more! BBQ Event Rescheduled for Fall

RibFest Throw DownThe RibFest Throwdown at Mark Coronado Park is being rescheduled for fall 2022. The new event name, dates and ticket information will be released in the coming months. This is a live music and BBQ festival presented by the City of Surprise in partnership with national event company Forty8 Live!

Fishing at Surprise Lake

Did you know the Game and Fish department keeps our community lake filled with catfish and trout most of the year? This is an excellent time to get outside and go fishing at our local lake. A fishing license is required for anyone age 10 and up. A youth license is only $5 for the entire year and is available up to age 18. Licenses are available at azgfd.gov.

Here is a schedule of when fish will be stocked into Surprise Lake (Bullard Ave. / Paradise Ln.):

  • April 11-15 Catfish
  • April 25-29 Catfish

Stockings will occur randomly Monday through Saturday during the week indicated. Grab a friend or your kids and catch a few!

Annual Action Plan Public Hearing Notice

In anticipation of receiving Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from the Department of Housing in Urban Development, a public hearing regarding the City’s Program Year 2022 Annual Action Plan will be held at the regular Veterans, Disability & Human Service Commission meeting on April 13 at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 16000 N. Civic Center Plz. The Program Year 2022 Annual Action Plan will identify specific projects to be funded that meet the goals and objectives identified in the 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan. Public comments received during the Public Hearing will be considered and included in the Plan. Comments can be emailed to adam.lane@surpriseaz.gov no later than April 8. Questions can also be directed to Adam via email or at 623.222.3238. City Council will take formal action on April 19, 2022.

Summer Youth Employment Program

The City is offering a summer job program for Surprise teens between the ages of 15 -19 who are income-eligible. Through the Summer Youth Employment Program, applicants must be available to work up to 25 hours a week for six weeks between June 6 and July 15. Chosen interns will receive professional development training, from shadowing engineers to working with youth and seniors, and earn $12.80 per hour.

Applications are available online at surpriseaz.gov/syep or can be picked up at City Hall by visiting the welcome desk and asking for Lord Garcillano. Electronic application submissions will be accepted through Sunday, April 17. In-person submissions will be accepted during normal City Hall business hours through Friday, April 15 at 5 p.m. For questions, please contact Lord Garcillano at lord.garcillano@surpriseaz.gov or 623.222.1647.

Fire Station 308 Opening Celebration

Councilmember Judd speaks at the Fire Station 308 ribbon cutting.City of Surprise held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in celebration of two Surprise fire stations built in 2021 – Fire Station 304 in our northern area and 308 in southeast Surprise. The ceremony held on December 14, included remarks from myself, Mayor Skip Hall, Councilmember Roland Winters, Fire-Medical Chief Tom Abbott and representatives from contractors Willmeng Construction and Perlman Architects. Following the remarks, was an official ribbon cutting and tour of Fire Station 308. Both fire stations were constructed thanks to voter approval of the 2017 General Obligation Bond, which funded 10 projects in the areas of public safety, traffic congestion mitigation and pavement preservation.

Fine Art & Wine Festival

The 10th Annual Surprise Fine Art & Wine Festival returns January 7 – 9, 2022. The event will take place 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day at Mark Coronado Park, 15960 N. Bullard Ave. Admission is $3 and is cash only.

This world-class, fine art event in Surprise, features the works of artist Kenneth Ferguson, along with other juried fine artists. Live music and a variety of food trucks will add to the atmosphere of the art arena.

Village at Prasada Groundbreaking Event

On Friday, December 3, we joined SimonCRE for a Ground Breaking ceremony! Josh Simon, President of SimonCRE, held the ceremony in honor of the beginning of the Village at Prasada near Loop 303 & Waddell Rd. The Village at Prasada is the first major power center on the West Coast in over a decade! Thank you for choosing Surprise!

Party in Surprise

A Christmas Tree in front of Surprise Stadium.Mayor and Council attended the tree lighting ceremony to kick off the Annual Surprise Party in front of the Surprise Stadium on Friday, December 3. I want to send a big thank you to the community for coming out to enjoy another successful holiday celebration, and to our Surprise Parks and Recreation team for all they do to make this a Winter Wonderland in the desert.

Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you need to dispose of your Christmas tree? Surprise is offering four Christmas tree drop-off locations for residents’ convenience. The lots are open now through January 18, 2022 at the following locations:

  • Bi-Centennial Park
    16705 N. Nash St. (south end of the parking lot)
  • Surprise Recreation Campus / Youth Baseball Complex
    15795 N. Parkview Pl. (across from Valley Vista High School)
  • Dick McComb Softball Park
    17894 Westpark Blvd. (parking lot on corner of 180th Ave & Westpark Blvd.)
  • Asante Community Park
    16763 W. Vereda Solana Dr. (parking lot at the north end of the park)

Be sure to remove all decorations before dropping off trees, and place them in the specified designated areas only. There is a limit of two trees per household. For more information, please call 623.222.1900.

MLK Celebration Events

Martin Luther King Jr.The City of Surprise is excited to announce two events honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in January 2022. The programs are for all ages and will include a variety of local musicians, performers and speakers.

  • Wednesday, January 12 – MLK Musical Celebration & Reflections
  • Saturday, January 15 – MLK Day of Celebration & Service

Sunday in the Park returns to Mark Coronado Park! Senior Center Holiday Luncheon

The Surprise Senior Center hosted their Annual Holiday Party to celebrate the holidays at The Colonnade on Friday, December 17. I, along with Mayor Skip Hall and Councilmembers Winters, Cline and Remley, were also in attendance. This annual event included a delicious lunch and raffles for all to enjoy. Thank you to the Surprise Senior Center for hosting such an incredible event for all of its members!

The Learning Experience Ribbon Cutting

On September 29, myself along with Mayor Hall and Councilmembers Ken Remley and Aly Cline, joined The Learning Experience for a Ribbon Cutting! Located at 15351 W. Cactus Rd., the Learning Experience held the ceremony in honor of their Grand Opening. Welcome to Surprise!

Block Party Trailer

City of Surprise Block Party logoThe City of Surprise is committed to building quality neighborhoods, and what better way to get to know your neighbors than by throwing a party! The Neighborhood Services Division offers free rentals of its Block Party Trailer. The trailer comes equipped with everything you will need to get your Block Party started, including:

  • Tables and Chairs
  • PA system and music
  • Generator
  • Canopy tents
  • Coolers
  • Sports equipment
  • Games
  • City information

City staff will deliver the trailer and be present during the event. You can also receive a Block Party Information Packet, which includes flyers and posters to help spread the word about your party. We’ll even help cover costs for refreshments and a bouncy house (the inflatable domes that children love to jump around in) or similar family-friendly entertainment! Submit receipts for up to $150 to help pay for local merchants’ select party amenities, including family entertainment. To book the block party trailer, go to surpriseaz.gov/blockparty.

Surprise Veterans Day Parade

The City of Surprise is hosting its 5th Annual Veterans Day Parade to honor those who have bravely served our country. The parade will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, November 11, and will run along Bullard Ave. between Paradise and Tierra Buena lanes.

The 2nd Annual Care & Share Expo will be held on Saturday, November 13. This year’s all-ages event will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Surprise City Hall 1st Floor Parking Garage, 16000 N. Civic Center Plz. Your participation or sponsorship will help the community connect to human service organizations, health resources and medical checks. This free event is a one-stop source for accessing programs and services that promote health, financial growth and self-empowerment. Plus, there will be fun for the entire family! Friends of the Surprise Libraries

Friday, October 8, Mayor Hall and Council Members Cline, Judd, and Hastings joined the Friends of the Surprise Libraries for a ribbon cutting! Joanne Heim, Board Member of Friends of the Surprise Libraries, hosted the ribbon cutting in honor of their newly renovated area at the Northwest Regional Library, 16089 N. Bullard Ave., Congratulations on your next chapter!

2021 Fiesta Grande

On Saturday, October 9, Mayor Hall and myself, along with Council Members Hastings, Judd, and Winters attended the 8th Annual Surprise Fiesta Grande held at the Original Town Site. The Executive Director for the Governor’s Office of Equal Opportunity presented Mayor and Council with a proclamation in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. Thank you to everyone who attended this wonderful event!

Best of the West

On Thursday, October 21, myself along with Mayor and Council attended the Best of the West Awards dinner which was held at State Farm Stadium. This event, hosted by WESTMARC, recognizes exceptional contributions to the image, lifestyle and economy here in the West Valley. This Awards Dinner is the signature event of the West Valley with a rich history of celebrating outstanding accomplishments and impacts to quality of life, economic development, innovation and leadership.

2021 SciTech Festival

Surprise SciTech Festival 2021Have fun with science and technology at the Surprise SciTech Festival on November 6, presented by the City of Surprise! This FREE, fun-filled educational event features interactive science, technology, engineering, art and math exhibits and demonstrations. It’s all happening 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Surprise City Hall Courtyard, 16000 N. Civic Center Plz. For more information on the event, please visit surpriseaz.gov/scitech.

Dependent Scholarship Winners

The City would like to recognize Alexis Klippel and Alina Bozhko as the recipients of the 2021 City of Surprise Scholarship Awards! The first place award of $3,000 will go to Alexis, the daughter of Randy Rody (Police Department). The second place award of $1,500 will go to Alina, the daughter of Leonid Bozhko (Information Technology). Congratulations to both winners!

The City recognizes Alexis Klippel and Alina Bozhko as the recipients of the 2021 City of Surprise Scholarship Awards.

G.A.I.N Night

On Saturday, October 23, I attended this family-friendly event, which brought the community together! It was a great turnout with trick or treating, a gaming trailer and laser tag, live music, Chick-Fil-A hot air balloon, and public safety displays. Thank you Surprise Police Department and Parks and Recreation for hosting such a wonderful event!

Just Be Youtiful Women’s Boutique

Monday, October 25, Mayor Hall, Council Member Aly Cline and I joined Just Be Youtiful Boutique for a ribbon cutting! Owner Kym Stutzman hosted the ceremony in honor of Just Be Youtiful Boutique’s grand opening, located at 15332 W. Bell Rd. Suite #135! Thank you for choosing Surprise!

Dysart School Parks Ribbon Cutting

On Friday, October 29, the Dysart School District hosted a ribbon cutting event, in coordination with the City, to announce the opening of their elementary school fields and playgrounds in Surprise to the public, after school hours and on weekends. It was great to be there to celebrate with Mayor Hall and other members of council.

New Development in Surprise

Our Economic Development Department wrapped up the fiscal year in July with nearly a million square feet of new development, $165 Million in new capital investment, 875 new jobs, and 33 businesses in the midst of the pandemic, including Amazon, Fry’s at Asante, Bath & Body Works, Bad AZ Axes, Black Rock Coffee, and Handel’s Ice Cream.

This fall, several new businesses opened: Muay Thai Jui Jitsu, The Learning Experience Academy of Early Education, Valvoline Instant Oil Change, The Partners Barbershop, Spirit Halloween Store, Sleep Number Mattress Store, a New Friends of the Library location, and Mobile Home Depot – and most recently, “Just Be Youtiful” boutique offering unique local clothing, jewelry & handbags!
