More Firefighters Hired
The Surprise Fire-Medical Department is adding 13 new firefighters! The FY20 budget we approved included funding for 5 new firefighters. A federal grant recently awarded us the funding for 8 additional firefighters. These new firefighters are expected to complete the academy and training by June 2020. Twelve of those positions will eventually be assigned to the new Fire Station 308 when it opens in late 2021 or early 2022 at Litchfield and Cactus roads.
White Tank Mountain Regional Park Wins Award
The beautiful White Tank Mountain Regional Park to our west has received some international acclaim! The park was recently awarded the 2019 Tripsavvy Editor’s Choice Award as best for outdoor enthusiasts! Congratulations to the staff and volunteers at the park! This is a great time of year to hike the trails, and visit the Nature Center and library at the White Tanks.
As our city grows, our roads need to expand so they can handle the increased traffic. The General Obligation Bond that residents voted for and passed in 2017, includes funding for Waddell Road and for Litchfield Road. The Waddell Road widening project and the Litchfield Road widening project are currently underway. These projects are scheduled to be completed spring of 2020. Reems Road from Cactus to Peoria roads is under construction for utility work. EPCOR is installing water lines and when they are finished, Southwest Gas will install gas lines.
Bonfire Craft Kitchen & Tap House Opening
Bonfire Craft Kitchen and Tap House is now open in the Brookside Village complex, east of Reems Road off of Bell Road. The restaurant specializes in re-inspired American classics. The goal is to focus on a family friendly atmosphere with fresh, made from scratch meals while also providing the best service.
Veterans Day Dedication and Parade
In honor of Veterans Day, the City of Surprise will be hosting a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the Veterans Reflection Circle on Monday, November 11 at 8:00 a.m. This event will be held outside of the Northwest Regional Library and will pay tribute to late Surprise resident and combat-wounded veteran, Brian Mancini. Following the dedication ceremony, the annual Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. along Bullard Avenue between Paradise Lane and Tierra Buena Lane. I invite you to join the celebration and help honor our military members.
The 2019 Surprise Party is scheduled for Friday, December 6 from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday, December 7 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Surprise Recreation Campus. The party will begin Friday night with live music, skydivers, tree lighting ceremony and a special visit from Santa. On Saturday, the festivities continue with crafts, pony rides, petting zoo, music, food and more. This event is free with your donation of a canned food item or a toy. I hope to see you all there as we begin to kick off the holiday season.
The 6th Annual Surprise Fiesta Grande event brought residents throughout Surprise to the Original Town Site to honor culture, tradition and community. Special guest Barry Wong, Executive Director at Governor Ducey’s Office of Equal Opportunity, presented a proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month. Also, Consul Deputy General of Mexico Armando Esparza joined in the celebration!
Surprise Day of Service
The Surprise Day of Service is a wonderful volunteer opportunity that brings residents together to help complete projects, clean up and take pride in our city. This event takes place 2-3 times a year, and this time there were over 300 participants! I thank everyone who came out to support Surprise and look forward to the next one.
Monthly Meet and Greet Postponed
Your feedback is important for me to understand how to effectively represent you. The monthly Meet and Greet is a great opportunity to speak face to face. You can ask me questions, share ideas, or chat about our community. The event takes place at Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, 14029 W. Waddell Road. Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up and will fall on our scheduled meeting days, so the next Meet and Greet is postponed until January 22. More information will follow as the date gets closer.
Council Meetings and Agenda
As a reminder, there will be two City Council Regular Meetings this month, first being today, Tuesday, November 5 at 6 p.m.; and the second on Tuesday, November 19. Agendas are always posted online at a minimum of two days prior. If you see something on the agenda that concerns you, please reach out before the meeting, so I have time to address your concern. I may even ask your questions during the City Council presentation.
City Offices Closed
All City Hall offices will be closed in honor of Veterans Day on Monday, November 11. They will also be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29 for Thanksgiving. I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday.
