Fire Station 308 Opening Celebration

Councilmember Judd speaks at the Fire Station 308 ribbon cutting.City of Surprise held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in celebration of two Surprise fire stations built in 2021 – Fire Station 304 in our northern area and 308 in southeast Surprise. The ceremony held on December 14, included remarks from myself, Mayor Skip Hall, Councilmember Roland Winters, Fire-Medical Chief Tom Abbott and representatives from contractors Willmeng Construction and Perlman Architects. Following the remarks, was an official ribbon cutting and tour of Fire Station 308. Both fire stations were constructed thanks to voter approval of the 2017 General Obligation Bond, which funded 10 projects in the areas of public safety, traffic congestion mitigation and pavement preservation.

Fine Art & Wine Festival

The 10th Annual Surprise Fine Art & Wine Festival returns January 7 – 9, 2022. The event will take place 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day at Mark Coronado Park, 15960 N. Bullard Ave. Admission is $3 and is cash only.

This world-class, fine art event in Surprise, features the works of artist Kenneth Ferguson, along with other juried fine artists. Live music and a variety of food trucks will add to the atmosphere of the art arena.

Village at Prasada Groundbreaking Event

On Friday, December 3, we joined SimonCRE for a Ground Breaking ceremony! Josh Simon, President of SimonCRE, held the ceremony in honor of the beginning of the Village at Prasada near Loop 303 & Waddell Rd. The Village at Prasada is the first major power center on the West Coast in over a decade! Thank you for choosing Surprise!

Party in Surprise

A Christmas Tree in front of Surprise Stadium.Mayor and Council attended the tree lighting ceremony to kick off the Annual Surprise Party in front of the Surprise Stadium on Friday, December 3. I want to send a big thank you to the community for coming out to enjoy another successful holiday celebration, and to our Surprise Parks and Recreation team for all they do to make this a Winter Wonderland in the desert.

Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you need to dispose of your Christmas tree? Surprise is offering four Christmas tree drop-off locations for residents’ convenience. The lots are open now through January 18, 2022 at the following locations:

  • Bi-Centennial Park
    16705 N. Nash St. (south end of the parking lot)
  • Surprise Recreation Campus / Youth Baseball Complex
    15795 N. Parkview Pl. (across from Valley Vista High School)
  • Dick McComb Softball Park
    17894 Westpark Blvd. (parking lot on corner of 180th Ave & Westpark Blvd.)
  • Asante Community Park
    16763 W. Vereda Solana Dr. (parking lot at the north end of the park)

Be sure to remove all decorations before dropping off trees, and place them in the specified designated areas only. There is a limit of two trees per household. For more information, please call 623.222.1900.

MLK Celebration Events

Martin Luther King Jr.The City of Surprise is excited to announce two events honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in January 2022. The programs are for all ages and will include a variety of local musicians, performers and speakers.

  • Wednesday, January 12 – MLK Musical Celebration & Reflections
  • Saturday, January 15 – MLK Day of Celebration & Service

Sunday in the Park

Sunday in the Park returns to Mark Coronado Park! Join us on January 23 from 3 – 7 p.m. for live music, various food trucks, an assortment of beer and wine and family-friendly entertainment such as bounce houses, face painting, a trackless train and more! Fishing at Surprise Lake

Did you know the Game and Fish department keeps our community lake filled with catfish and trout most of the year? This is an excellent time to get outside and go fishing at our local lake. A fishing license is required for anyone age 10 and up. A youth license is only $5 for the entire year and is available up to age 18. Licenses are available at azgfd.gov.

Here is a schedule of when fish will be stocked into Surprise Lake (Bullard Ave. / Paradise Ln.):

  • January 10-14, Trout
  • January 24-28, Trout

Stockings will occur randomly Monday through Saturday during the week indicated. Grab a friend or your kids and catch a few!

Senior Center Holiday Luncheon

The Surprise Senior Center hosted their Annual Holiday Party to celebrate the holidays at The Colonnade on Friday, December 17. I, along with Mayor Skip Hall and Councilmembers Winters, Cline and Remley, were also in attendance. This annual event included a delicious lunch and raffles for all to enjoy. Thank you to the Surprise Senior Center for hosting such an incredible event for all of its members!

Fire Station 308 Complete

Construction is complete on Fire Station 308, located on the south side of Cactus Road, east of Litchfield Road, and the station is operational today. Fire Station 308 is approximately 16,000 square feet with four bays for fire apparatus. It houses an Engine Company and Hazardous Materials Response Team – an essential component due to the station’s proximity to the city’s industrial district. The station is designed to provide training specific to responses to hazardous materials emergencies and has room for a future ambulance.

The Partners BarberShop

Mayor Hall and I joined The Partners BarberShop for a ribbon cutting! It’s located at 14557 W. Grand Ave., Suite #105. Co-owners Hawel Ramirez and Fernando Florentino hosted the ceremony in honor of The Partners Barbershop joining the community. Welcome to Surprise; we are happy to have you!

Ottawa’s 1st Home Football Game

Ottawa University hosted its first home football game on Saturday, September 4. Ottawa wanted to spotlight its partnership with the City of Surprise during halftime by recognizing Mayor and Council, who support the partnership.

Fiesta Grande

Our annual street festival is back! Join us for the 8th Annual Surprise Fiesta Grande to celebrate our city’s cultural heritage on Saturday, October 9 from 5 – 10 p.m. Admission and parking are free! Plus, we’ll have free shuttle drop-off to the area. Authentic Mexican food, classic car show, arts and crafts, music & live entertainment, and more! G.A.I.N Night

Surprise Police Department badgeSurprise Public Safety officials invite you to attend the upcoming G.A.I.N. Night (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods). This free, interactive community event is Saturday, October 23, from 5 – 9 p.m. at Mark Coronado Park – 15960 N. Bullard Ave. There will be trick-or-treating, a gaming trailer and laser tag, live music, a Chick-Fil-A hot air balloon, public safety displays by Surprise Police and Fire-Medical, and so much more! Surprise Veterans Day Parade

The City of Surprise is hosting its 5th Annual Veterans Day Parade to honor those who have bravely served our country. The parade will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, November 11, and will run along Bullard Ave. between Paradise and Tierra Buena lanes.

Surprise Day of Service Event

Show your community pride by participating in a day of community service on October 16 from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at the Surprise Senior Center, 15832 N. Hollyhock St., before venturing out to various cleanup and beautification projects across the city. Projects will run until approximately noon. Care & Share Expo

The 2nd Annual Care & Share Expo will be held on Saturday, November 13. This year’s all-ages event will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Surprise City Hall 1st Floor Parking Garage, 16000 N. Civic Center Plz. Your participation or sponsorship will help the community connect to human service organizations, health resources and medical checks. This free event is a one-stop source for accessing programs and services that promote health, financial growth, and self-empowerment. Plus, there will be fun for the entire family! 2050 MAG Regional Transportation Plan

Do you want a choice of safe and reliable options to get around the Valley of the Sun? From September 13 – October 13, Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is asking for your input and review of the MOMENTUM 2050 Regional Transportation Plan, 2022-2025 Transportation Improvement Program, and 2021 MAG Conformity Analysis. Surprise AZ Fall League

Arizona Fall League logoThe month of October truly is for baseball, and with the start of the Arizona Fall League, the City of Surprise sets the stage for baseball’s future breakout stars. The Surprise Saguaros, one of six teams who compete in the Arizona Fall League, will begin their season Tuesday, October 14 at Surprise Stadium. The roster for the Surprise Saguaros will include the top prospects from the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, and Washington Nationals. APS West Valley Central 230KV Connection Project Update

APS is currently in the process of conducting technical analysis to determine the potential routing options for the new 230kV power lines. Another round of public comment will be solicited following the determination of a preferred route. More information should be available at the end of February. 2021 Surprise City Academy

The Surprise City Academy is going virtual this year. Classes will begin on February 22 and will happen weekly on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. through April 26. The Surprise City Academy is a great way to learn about city government structure, get updated on local issues, and get to know your city leaders! The class is FREE, but you must be registered. Day of Service

If you are looking for a way to help others, please consider helping out during the Surprise Day of Service on February 20, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Volunteers will help with various projects, including landscaping, painting, trimming of shrubs, debris removal, and more. Projects will help neighborhoods and homeowners who may not be physically or financially able to maintain their homes. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Larry Garcia at Larry.Garcia@surpriseaz.gov or call 623.222.1522.

City offices are closed on February 15 in observance of Presidents’ Day. Please note that the holiday sanitation schedule will be in effect.

Spring Training

Spring Training 2021 is scheduled to begin on February 27. The Texas Rangers are set to take on the Kansas City Royals on February 27 at 1:05 p.m.! Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, the Spring Training Schedule and information is subject to change.

What’s Happening on that Lot?

  • Amazon construction is moving along and expected to be completed by April 2021!
  • EOS Fitness Marley Park, located at 13644 N. Litchfield Park
  • Horizon Aviation & Machining, located 11267 N. 132nd Avenue
  • Ancona at Surprise Pointe 33, located at the NWC of Dysart Road and Sweetwater Avenue. This 27 acre site will house two industrial buildings, one 84,300 sq.ft. and the other 72,000 sq.ft., each containing 12 spec suites.

Construction is continuing on Fire Station 308, located at the southeast corner of Litchfield Road and Cactus Road.
