Major League Baseball Announces Spring Training Delay
The City of Surprise is disappointed to share that Major League Baseball has officially announced a delay to Spring Training. Tickets bought through an authorized outlet to canceled games will be refunded or exchanged. MLB is working to get the game back on the field as quickly as possible. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at a game at Surprise Stadium later this spring.
- If you purchased tickets to a canceled game for the Kansas City Royals or Texas Rangers through an authorized Surprise Stadium outlet, tickets may be refunded or exchanged.

Surprise Youth Council
The City is recruiting new members for the Surprise Youth Council (SYC)! SYC members serve the community by collaborating with local leaders, including Mayor and City Council, to give a voice on City issues and help solve youth issues through awareness campaigns, service projects and community-building events. APS 230kV Connection Project
The West Valley is benefiting from economic development activity that will bring jobs and revenue to the area. With strong growth in the area and increased electrical load demand, comes a need for new 230 kilovolt (kV) power lines and a substation in the area to serve new customers. If approved, studies will begin late spring/early summer and the project will conclude in 2023. Project Connect Event
The Human Services Campus is partnering with the Salvation Army and the City of Surprise to bring back the Project Connect event on Tuesday, March 22 from 8-3 p.m. at the Salvation Army Northwest Valley, 17420 Avenue of the Arts. Project Connect is a one-day, one-stop event to assist individuals experiencing homelessness connect to a variety of services. Volunteers are needed! 4th Annual Surprise 5K/1K
Get your Major League juices running and join us at the Surprise Stadium on Friday, March 4 with the 4th Annual Surprise Spring Training 5K and 1K Fun Run presented by Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. This 5K & 1K will begin at 7 p.m. and take you on a scenic run through the City before heading back to the ballpark to cross the finish line! All runners will receive a Spring Training Race t-shirt, medal, and a “buy one, get one” lawn seat voucher to lawn seat voucher to a Spring Training game. Register now to take advantage of the discounted rates; 5K: $30 and 1K: $15. Early registration ends on March 3 and then prices increase to 5K: $40 and 1K: $20. Registration is now open at SurpriseStadium.com/events.
Tax Preparation Assistance Program
The City of Surprise has partnered again with A New Leaf to offer free tax preparation services to both individuals and families with qualifying incomes. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers IRS trained and certified volunteers to assist households making less than $58,000 and need help processing their annual income tax returns for free. Tax preparation assistance will be available until April 18 at the Surprise Resource Center, 12425 W. Bell Rd., Suite 124 and through April 13 at Riverboat Bingo, 18300 W. Bell Rd. Free Testing Sites
In response to increasing demand for COVID-19 testing, Maricopa County has opened multiple community testing sites across the Valley including a new location at Ak-Chin Pavilion staffed with resources through FEMA. The new daily PCR testing site at Ak-Chin Pavilion is located near the Loop 101 and I-10 freeways and is open seven days per week from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. This site takes people with and without appointments and allows people to either drive through or walk up for testing. This site is operated in part with assistance from FEMA, who contracted a team to provide testing support.
Details of all Maricopa County-supported testing events are listed at Maricopa.gov/COVID19Testing in English and at Maricopa.gov/COVID19Pruebas in Spanish. People who need assistance finding a testing location or scheduling an appointment can also call the MCDPH CARES Team at 602.506.6767 for assistance in multiple languages.
Essay Contest Winners
Three talented students were recognized at the Council Meeting on Wednesday, February 15, as the winners of the Dysart Schools / City of Surprise essay contest where they were asked, “Why is ‘My Surprise’ an extraordinary community to be a part of?”

Spring Eggstravaganza Vendors Wanted
The City invites interested outreach organizations, promotional vendors and local businesses to participate in the Spring Eggstravaganza! The event is free and features fun for the whole family. Residents will enjoy inflatables, face painting, a special appearance by Mr. and Mrs. Bunny and a series of egg hunts filled with fun toys and treats. The event takes place Saturday, April 16 from 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Surprise Recreation Campus. To reserve your spot, go to surpriserec.surpriseaz.gov where you can create an account for your organization if you haven’t already, then click the Special Events tab where you can register. Sunday in the Park
Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and dancing shoes for Sunday in the Park at Mark Coronado Park! Join us on April 3 from 3 – 7 p.m. for live music, various food trucks, an assortment of beer and wine and family-friendly entertainment such as bounce houses, face painting, a trackless train and more! Fishing at Surprise Lake
Did you know the Game and Fish department keeps our community lake filled with catfish and trout most of the year? This is an excellent time to get outside and go fishing at our local lake. A fishing license is required for anyone age 10 and up. A youth license is only $5 for the entire year and is available up to age 18. Licenses are available at azgfd.gov.
Here is a schedule of when fish will be stocked into Surprise Lake (Bullard Ave. / Paradise Ln.):
- March 7-11 Trout
- April 11-15 Catfish
- April 25-29 Catfish
Stockings will occur randomly Monday through Saturday during the week indicated. Grab a friend or your kids and catch a few!

Council Meetings and Agenda
The next regularly scheduled City Council Meeting will take place on March 15 at 6 p.m. and will be open to the public for in-person attendance. You can also watch live at surpriseaz.gov/surprisetv or the Surprise City Gov Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofsurprise. Cox channel 11 also carries the meetings live. Agendas are always posted online at a minimum of two days prior.
