It is an honor and a privilege to be selected by my colleagues to serve as the Vice Mayor of Surprise. City Council selects a Vice Mayor every January to serve a 1-year term. I very much appreciate the opportunity to further serve our great community and I am looking forward to a great year in Surprise!
The Public Works Department is the group in charge of recycling in our city. They are going to give a public presentation to City Council at our next Regular City Council Work Session, which is on February 4 at 4 pm. You can attend the meeting in person, or view it online at www.surpriseaz.gov/surprisetv. If you miss the presentation, a video will copy be available at the same link above under the “meetings” tab. This will be a great way to get details on the challenges and potential solutions to our recycling problem. If you have any ideas or comments, before or after the presentation, please send them to me!

Road Work Update
The Waddell Road project is nearing completion and the city is still aiming for an opening date this spring! Waddell Road will have a total of six travel lanes, a traffic signal at Sarival Avenue, streetlights, bike lanes, turn lanes and more. Litchfield Road is scheduled for a July 2020 completion date. Paving will begin from Cactus to Sweetwater while grading work south of Cactus is ongoing. The improvements will include two additional lanes of travel, sidewalks, bike lanes, street lighting and more.
Cactus Road is closed from Citrus to Perryville Roads; and Perryville is closed from Cactus to Shangri La Roads, for utility work, with a scheduled reopening of February 15. Drivers should consider Peoria Avenue or Cotton Lane as alternative routes.
Please remember that utility companies are constantly doing work that may impact traffic flow. We appreciate your patience during this time.
State of the State
A special thank you to Senator Majority Leader Rick Gray for the hosting Mayor Skip Hall and I at the State Capitol for the Senate Opening Ceremony, on Monday, January 13. Following Opening Session, we were invited to the House Chamber where Governor Doug Ducey gave his State of the State address.
Toll Brothers has welcomed Sterling Grove to Surprise. This new community spreads across nearly 800 acres south of Cactus Road and Cotton Lane. They offer 13 model homes, 3 pools, club houses, a golf course and much more. Thank you for choosing Surprise!
Spring Training kicks off on February 21 as the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers compete at home. This season will bring 29 games to the Surprise Stadium for your enjoyment! Tickets are available for purchase online or in person at the Box Office. For more information, the full game schedule, ticket purchase and more, please visit www.SurpriseStadium.com.
The Surprise Community Park, 15930 N. Bullard Ave, will host the Teen Sand Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, February 29 from 4-7 pm. Teens, ages 12-17, will need to have a completed participation waiver turned in prior to play.
